Al estetizarse la vida cotidiana, aparece ante nuestros ojos una inflación estética, la infiltración de lo estético en todos los intersticios de lo antes considerado corriente: comer se vuelve un rito estético, un par de medias -la prenda más aburrida- se vuelve objeto de fascinación estética, la visita a un museo -antiguo espacio donde la añeja jerarquía del arte se hacía presente- es ocasión para fotografías cool, la lectura -un acto otrora de gozo individual- se vuelve un acontecimiento que debe ser presentado al público de forma estética; todo con fines comerciales pero que se ocultan bajo el discurso de afirmación de la identidad.
¿Pero qué es la historia de América Latina toda sino una crónica de lo real maravilloso?

Cae la tarde y las luces no se encienden, los postes son inútiles, la noche se avecina y no podemos evitar su oscuridad; debemos aceptar, de nuevo, la penumbra. Un par de velas colocadas en lugares estratégicos intentan, sin mucho éxito, aclarar nuestros pasos, mejorar nuestra mirada. Pasa en muchos sitios, no en todos, seguramente habrá espacios privilegiados de luz groseramente permanente. Escribo desde un pequeño pueblo de la costa ecuatoriana, lugar lleno de comercios que hoy tampoco pudieron atender. Suenan radios a pilas. Los locutores intentan subir el ánimo de sus fieles oyentes, a ratos lo logran.
En el día, los niños regresan de la escuela con el bochorno pegado a su piel luego de horas de intentar estudiar en aulas abarrotadas y calientes; sin embargo, no pierden la alegría. Su inocencia los protege de la indignación. Ancianos se sientan en la puerta de sus casas para darse un poco de aire con un periódico que hace las veces de abanico. En una casa cercana a la mía, en su pórtico, que la puedo ver desde mi ventana, un grupo de hombres mayores juegan cartas todas las noches; no perdonan ni fines de semana ni feriados. Estas noches no son la excepción. Acomodan unas velas que solo iluminan la mesa, no es necesario nada más, no dejan de jugar. Curioso como soy, hago un enorme esfuerzo por escuchar su conversación, sus tribulaciones, victorias y derrotas o, simplemente, sus aburridos días, bastante parecidos a los míos; debería estar con ellos, me repito cada noche.
Vuelve la luz, mientras alguien muy lejos de aquí no decida lo contrario, tendremos cuatro horas seguidas de luz que nos permitirán, a mí y a mi familia -imagino que a todas las familias- recuperar las horas que nos arrebataron o por lo menos tratarlo. Alguien prende la televisión; los noticieros solo deprimen, indignan, aunque nunca falta el segmento farandulero que quiere hacernos creer que con la pura voluntad haremos de estos días los mejores. No encuentro mejor momento para pensar en la idea de la ciudadela interior de Marco Aurelio: cuando el contexto es adverso debo crear un espacio en mí, dentro de mí, en el que sea realmente soberano; no me dura mucho tiempo esa sublime intención. Marco Aurelio lo dijo siendo emperador; es fácil construir una invulnerable fortaleza espiritual cuando se es emperador, o quizá me falta sabiduría práctica, da lo mismo. No es un imperial estoico con quien me identifico estos días; me siento más cercano a uno de los personajes de la película Parásitos (2019), a aquella vieja amargada que sabe que eso de ser bueno y simpático es mucho más fácil si se tiene dinero.
Pero no llego a desesperarme, de todas formas, mi familia y yo aguantamos día tras día; no tenemos opción. Hoy, a diferencia de hace unos años, es más fácil distraerse, desconectarse, volver vivible lo invivible. Nosotros no lo hacemos como mis lúdicos vecinos, nos falta desenfado, desparpajo, sinvergüencería. El internet, que a veces tenemos, nos permite comprar sueños por horas. Imaginar, por un rato, que no estamos jodidos. Esa capacidad de romper el tiempo ordinario, difícil e inasible, y construir uno extraordinario, emocionante, aunque temporal, guarda una cruel paradoja: la ilusión que provoca tener opciones de entretenimiento, formas de dejar de ser uno y la posibilidad de ser otro o simplemente dejar de pensar en el presente, al mismo tiempo de desconectarnos, nos adormece. Un amigo me llamó hace unos días para comentarme su desazón por la increíble pasividad que nos caracteriza: “en otras épocas ya habríamos estado en las calles”, me dice; “en otras épocas, a esta altura ya habríamos botado al gobierno completo”, nos decimos.
Esa llamada no era casual, mi amigo no intentaba solamente desahogarse, intentaba encontrar en mí una explicación. Ser filósofo adquiere sentido, especialmente para los demás, cuando podemos explicar la realidad, mirar las causas últimas, encontrar razones de carácter universal, nada más y nada menos. Él pretendía que calme sus inquietudes reconfortándolo con una explicación total. Nada más alejado de lo posible. El Hombre en abstracto al que nos ha tenido acostumbrada la filosofía occidental no tiene los problemas concretos que tenemos los hombres de carne y hueso. El Hombre en abstracto solo puede reconocerse a sí mismo, solo tiene un espejo frente a sí. Los hombres de carne y hueso nos reconocemos entre nosotros, nos odiamos y nos amamos, nos ignoramos, protegemos y anulamos. El racionalismo trascendente del Hombre tropieza con la realidad inmanente del hombre.
Esto no quiere decir que la abstracción que caracteriza a la filosofía convierte a esta disciplina en una mera ilusión, un juego de espejos que solo distrae la mirada, sino que la reflexión filosófica no puede ni debe desatender la realidad en que está situada, el lugar concreto desde donde, ciertamente, aspiramos a lo universal. Sigo, como es innegable, las ideas de Leopoldo Zea. Si esto es así, si el filósofo mexicano tuvo razón, la paradoja que mencioné antes es menos intrincada, enmarañada, aunque no menos compleja. El ethos histórico -aquel concepto echeverriano- designa el habitar humano, en tanto histórico, en el que se construyen proyectos que procuran resolver la contradicción de una forma concreta de socialidad. En la modernidad capitalista, siguiendo la senda marcada por Echeverría (1998), el ethos histórico intenta resolver la contradicción entre el disfrute social de los valores de uso y su permanente sacrificio por medio de la reproducción de su riqueza (la valorización del valor abstracto). Su propuesta considera que la modernidad está compuesta por varias versiones de ella y que por eso es posible y deseable una modernidad no capitalista.
Un drama contemporáneo es que el capitalismo ha mostrado una versatilidad que me recuerda a aquella fábula renacentista en la que el personaje central tenía la capacidad camaleónica de participar de todas las naturalezas y cautivar al mismo Júpiter:
Así como el más grande de los dioses abarca todas las cosas con su poder y es todas las cosas, así también veían que era este pantomimo de Júpiter, ya que algunas veces se transformaba de tal manera que salía al escenario en forma de planta, imitando un solo tipo de vida sin ninguno de los sentidos. Poco después, cuando ya se había retirado, regresaba al escenario como un mimo e imitador de formas, convertido en miles de especies de animales: dirías que era un león irritado y furioso, un lobo rapaz y feroz, un jabalí salvaje, una zorra astuta, una voluptuosa y sucia cerda, una tímida liebre, un perro envidioso, un burro estúpido (Vives, 2018, p. 16).
Echeverría identifica cuatro formas, ethé, de vivir el capitalismo o, más bien, de hacer vivible el hecho capitalista. Y es el ethos barroco el único entre ellos (los otros son el realista, el romántico y el clásico) que reivindica la forma social-natural de la vida y su mundo de valores de uso, en una especie de resistencia a su sacrificio. Este carácter (re)afirmativo de la vida, responde a su origen latinoamericano. Frente a un contexto histórico adverso, en el que las fuentes de comprensión de la realidad son anuladas, es decir, cuando opera una forzada transición de una ontología no moderna a una moderna, era necesario burlar esas serias pretensiones, simular aquiescencia de forma tan exagerada que en realidad conducía a lo que el filósofo llama, siguiendo a Bataille, la afirmación de la vida aun en la muerte.
La ruptura festiva se cumple mediante la organización de todo un espacio ceremonial y un acontecer ritual que reconstruyen al mundo como mundo imaginario a fin de que ahí tenga lugar el trance que saca a los humanos de su existencia rutinaria. Es una ruptura que no puede darse sin el aparecimiento de un discurso propio, que es el discurso mítico, un discurso que, por su parte, no puede narrarse ni escucharse «en frío», que requiere ciertos recursos, de embriaguez, de complicidad, que sólo están disponibles en una circunstancia festiva (Echeverría, 2001, p. 219).
No es extraño que el ethos barroco sea una forma de (sobre)vivir al capitalismo que el filósofo ecuatoriano encuentra en la historia y el presente de América Latina; cuando una comunidad pobre ahorra todo el año, no para solucionar sus necesidades básicas, sino para celebrar una fiesta, no es sino el ethos barroco el que está presente (ilustración que no es mía sino de Stefan Gandler). Y es que el barroco, en su sentido artístico, connota lo ornamental, lo superficial, lo extravagante, pero también lo ritualista; así, por analogía, el comportamiento barroco de la modernidad capitalista se caracteriza por lo improductivo y lo irresponsable. Y no hay nada más improductivo que la fiesta, el juego, el carnaval, la ruptura del tiempo lineal.
En la ceremonia festiva reconstruida estéticamente acontece una serie de sucesos, tiene lugar y ocasión una serie de actos. Alguien dice algo, pronuncia las palabras necesarias para que tenga lugar la ceremonia ritual; alguien se desplaza con un determinado ritmo y en un determinado contorno objetivo. Esa palabra, ese ritmo y ese contorno identificados concretamente indican las tres perspectivas simbólicas elementales de la totalidad virtual de la estetización [eje de la palabra, eje del tiempo y eje del espacio] (Echeverría, 2001, p. 209).
La vida social sufre una ruptura estética, el comportamiento cotidiano se estetiza espontáneamente. Ahora bien, el poder del capitalismo para aumentar las desigualdades, suprimir capacidades intelectuales, afectivas y estéticas de los individuos (empobrecimiento de la vida que Jouvenel llamaba pérdida de amabilidad), hoy se mantiene, pero con un cambio fundamental, propio de su capacidad mutable, las lógicas productivas del sistema y de consumo actualmente utilizan máscaras de naturaleza fundamentalmente estética. Desde hace cuarenta años, no mucho más, occidente -no especialmente en sentido geográfico sino conceptual- vive lo que Lipovetsky llama capitalismo transestético (si bien también utiliza otros adjetivos como creativo, artístico y sensible):
[Un capitalismo transestético] que se caracteriza por el peso creciente de los mercados de la sensibilidad y del proceso diseñador, por un trabajo sistemático de estilización de los bienes y lugares comerciales, de integración generalizada del arte, del look y de la sensibilidad afectiva en el universo consumista. Al crear un paisaje económico mundial caótico estilizando el universo de lo cotidiano, el capitalismo no es tanto un ogro que devora a sus propios hijos como un Jano de dos caras (Lipovetsky y Serroy, 2015, p. 49).
El filósofo francés describe a este tipo de capitalismo echando mano de la bifrontalidad de Jano porque no deja de ser cínico y agresivo, no deja de buscar la máxima rentabilidad y la acumulación, sino que lo hace explotando «racionalmente y de manera generalizada las dimensiones estético-imaginario-emocionales con fines de ganancia y conquista de mercados» (Lipovetsky y Serroy, 2015, p. 10). No se puede ser más perverso.

El homo aestheticus del capitalismo sensible, sin embargo, oculta una realidad latente: esa vida bella, emocionante, vibrante, no se corresponde con la miseria humana que ella mismo produce, un «teatro de las apariencias» (Lipovetsky y Roux, 2004, p. 62). Resolver la paradoja no es sencillo. Lo real maravillo, esa feliz expresión de Carpentier, nos invita a mirar nuestra realidad al tiempo de imaginar un mundo posible, una utopía. El ethos barroco representa esa posibilidad latente. Aníbal Quijano sostiene que todo cambio de la sociedad tiene lugar, primero, como transfiguración estética; la utopía se encuentra, primero, en el reino de la estética. En ese sentido, una estética latinoamericana, no se concibe al margen de un compromiso ético, la afirmación de la vida: “la estética debe estar a favor de la vida, al menos en su acepción más profunda y no respecto del ejercicio usual como el pensamiento en torno al arte y la belleza” (Quezada, 2020, p. 149). Consecuentemente, lo que no afirme la vida, no puede ser bello.
La filosofía latinoamericana siempre es política porque no puede considerarse al margen de la acción. Hoy tenemos un escenario en el que ciertas categorías deben repensarse, ese mundo posible, un mundo no capitalista, parece más lejano que nunca; al mismo tiempo, un buen amigo, no el de la llamada, me recordaba que es precisamente este estado de cosas el que anuncia el momento mesiánico del que Benjamin hablaba; me dio ánimo escucharle. El ethos barroco, no es en sí mismo anticapitalista, pero pretende cuidar lo que la modernidad capitalista quiere destruir: el mundo de la vida, el del valor de uso. El enorme peligro que enfrentamos es que ese capitalismo creativo avanza cual enano puesto las botas de siete leguas, como dice Kierkegaard, y también se adueña, sin hacérnoslo notar, de nuestras expresiones cotidianas de ruptura, gozo improductivo que de ser expresiones de resistencia muta a actividades fastidiosamente útiles.
Me ha tomado muchos días terminar este ensayo, en realidad, es solamente un primer intento por encontrarle sentido -triste sentido- al aletargamiento social que vivimos, pese a que el contexto, de dolor y sufrimiento por doquier, exige otra cosa, que cuidemos y preservemos los espacios de imaginación y creatividad liberadora y emancipadora, como formas cotidianas de vencer a ese perverso enano. Todo esto lo sé porque observo a mis vecinos que, al olvidar el mundo, resisten, lo hacen cada noche, al gastar -digerir, no perder- el tiempo entre el juego y la risa.
