La modernidad, esa fuerza transformadora que se despliega con una intensidad implacable desde hace siglos, es una característica definitoria del mundo contemporáneo. Bolívar Echeverría, un agudo pensador latinoamericano, nos invita a reflexionar sobre la naturaleza y las implicaciones de esta modernidad, retándonos a entender su novedad y su impacto. A través de su análisis, Echeverría desentraña cómo lo moderno no solo reemplaza lo tradicional, sino que también lo desafía, cuestionando su relevancia y eficacia. Uno de los fenómenos centrales que Echeverría identifica como emblemáticamente moderno es la confianza en la técnica y la razón matematizadora. Esta fe en la capacidad humana para comprender y manipular la naturaleza mediante el conocimiento técnico representa una ruptura radical con la visión mágica y metafísica del mundo. La técnica moderna, con su insistencia en la eficiencia y el control racional, desplaza la antigua confianza en las fuerzas sobrenaturales y en la intervención divina. Sin embargo, este cambio no es meramente un avance técnico, sino un cambio profundo en la cosmovisión humana, un alejamiento del misticismo hacia un enfoque secular y racionalista.
En la esfera política, Echeverría observa una secularización similar. La política moderna se define por un materialismo que pone a la economía en el centro de la vida social, relegando lo cultural y lo comunitario a un segundo plano. Este fenómeno refleja la primacía de la sociedad burguesa y el interés económico en la configuración del Estado, sustituyendo las estructuras de poder tradicionales, que estaban más íntimamente ligadas a la religión y la identidad cultural. La modernidad política, entonces, no solo transforma las instituciones, sino que reconfigura las relaciones de poder y autoridad, introduciendo una lógica basada en el interés material y la competencia económica.
El individualismo es otro pilar de la modernidad que Echeverría destaca. La idea de que el individuo singular es el átomo fundamental de la realidad humana es una concepción radicalmente nueva, que choca con la visión comunitaria tradicional. Este individualismo implica igualitarismo y contractualismo, promoviendo una democracia basada en la igualdad de derechos y oportunidades. Sin embargo, también introduce tensiones nuevas, ya que la valoración de la individualidad puede socavar las estructuras comunitarias y jerárquicas que han sostenido las sociedades tradicionales.
